Prof. Samuel Kyei

Prof. Samuel Kyei is an Associate Professor of the Clinical Optometry, School of Allied Health Sciences, University of Cape Coast and the Founding Director of the Biomedical and Clinical Research Centre, BCRC, University of Cape Coast. He holds a PhD in Optometry from the University of KwaZulu -Natal, Durban, South Africa, Master of Philosophy in Pharmacology from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST, a Doctor of Optometry Degree with BSc Ophthalmic Sciences from the University of Cape Coast.  Prof. Samuel Kyei was the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology Roche Collaboration for Research Award Winner. He collaborated with Dr. Lyne Racette of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, University of Alabama of Birmingham, Alabama, USA of project. Prof. Kyei has participated in several workshops, training and programmes in the higher education including academic leadership, teaching and learning in higher education, academic writing and publication, research ethics, and workshops for research supervisors. Prof. Samuel Kyei serves as a Visiting Professor of Optometry, Bindura University of Science Education, BUSE, Zimbabwe, where he led a team in the establishment of the first Optometry programme. He helped established a maiden laboratory for the training of optometrists in BUSE, and played a key role in the recruitment of young and energetic Optometry educators to run and sustain the programme. He serves as an external examiner to several Optometry and Ophthalmology programmes in African particularly, Malawi and Rwanda. This has endowed him with the opportunity to have a clear understanding of the Africa’s terrain, so far as health sciences education is concern. Prof. Samuel Kyei is an illustrious Optometry educator, an astute researcher and a mentor who has received recognition for his scholarly works. He is ranked among the top 10 most published researchers at the University of Cape Coast with more than 100 peer reviewed journal articles to his credit. At the international front he was identified to serve as a member of the sub-specialty working group (ocular surface and anterior eye) by the World Health Organization, WHO in contributing to the Package of Eye Care Interventions launched at the 75th World Health Assembly. Prof. Kyei has served on a number of boards at the local (University), regional and national levels.  He engages in several other outreach and extension duties both at the University and at the National level. He practices and consults at the Department of Optometry Eye Clinic and the University of Cape Coast Eye clinic as a professional optometrist.
